Safe Driving Tips for Bad Weather

Driving in rain is unavoidable and we all have to do it. Being ready and prepared will keep you safe.

So what should you do if you find yourself driving in bad weather?

With Perth’s heavy rains and hail storms it is sometimes difficult to drive on slippery roads and with poor visibility. The best approach is to avoid driving if you can. But if going out is necessary or you get caught in bad weather conditions then the following could keep you safe:

Be Prepared

Prepare yourself for bad weather. You should have an umbrella, flashlight, and rain gear in your car. These are the basics but many of us jump in our vehicle when the weather looks nice and end up driving in a shower.

Headlights

Make sure your headlights are switched on. This makes you more visible to other drivers on the road.

Slow Down

Braking takes longer on slippery roads. The slower you go, the easier it will be for you to recognise potential hazards and control, slow and stop your vehicle. Slower speeds give you more time to react if something happens. Many accidents happen because drivers are going too fast for the road conditions.

Hold your steering wheel firmly

Keep full control of your vehicle with two hands on the wheel and two eyes on the road and mind focused on driving at all times.

Lane changes

Avoid unnecessary lane changes and try to stay in one lane as much as possible. Don’t go zipping in and out of traffic.

Avoid Distractions

Make sure that you avoid being distracted, such as by checking your mobile phone, eating food or doing make up while driving. It’s easy to get distracted while driving and you could be in trouble in the blink of an eye.

Safe Driving Report 2018

Research performed by Finder.com.au on Safe Driving Report 2018 shows the bad habits that Aussie drivers have picked up and the riskiest things that they’ve done behind the wheel. The study found that drivers in Victoria and Western Australia are the riskiest drivers in Australia with 64% driving while distracted.

Take away!

Just remember: don’t venture out if you don’t have to; drive safely on the roads and; stay focused.
